North Korea tests hypersonic missile as Seoul halts sanctions relief

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated following North Korea's announcement of a successful hypersonic missile test and South Korea's reversal on proposed sanctions relief.

North Korean state media released footage of a modernized short-range ballistic missile equipped with a hypersonic glider. Kim Jong-un, accompanied by Kim Ju Ae, described the weapon as an ‘unstoppable force’ designed to bypass enemy defense systems. Experts note that while China and Russia possess deployed hypersonic systems, this test represents a significant technical advancement for Pyongyang.

Simultaneously, the South Korean government has withdrawn plans to ease unilateral sanctions against North Korea. This decision follows warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that Seoul cannot make such decisions without Washington's prior approval. South Korean officials, including Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, indicated that easing pressure is premature while Pyongyang refuses to take responsibility for the sinking of the Cheonan.
