North Korea to advance nuclear program despite U.S. overtures

North Korea has announced it will continue to advance its nuclear weapons program, maintaining a hardline stance despite recent diplomatic overtures from the United States. A spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry criticized U.S. policy as unchanged, noting that Washington continues to demand complete denuclearization.

Tensions are further heightened by the upcoming “Freedom Edge” military exercise, scheduled for September 7 to 11. The joint maneuver involving the United States, South Korea, and Japan will take place in international waters near Jeju Island. The South Korean General Staff described the exercise as a defensive measure intended to respond to North Korean nuclear and missile threats and to ensure regional stability.

While Donald Trump has expressed interest in meeting with Kim Jong-un this autumn, North Korea has not responded with rapprochement. Instead, the state news agency KCNA emphasized that the expansion of its nuclear arsenal is a “responsible and correct option” to guarantee the defense of its sovereignty and regional security.
