North Korea to resume border propaganda broadcasts
Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has announced that North Korea will resume propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts directed at South Korea along the border before the end of October. The announcement follows Kim's visit to the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone, where she characterized the move as an “appropriate reaction” to South Korean military actions, including recent warning shots fired by South Korean troops.
In addition to the planned broadcasts, North Korea has significantly altered the border region since the spring of 2024. This includes the demolition of historical road and rail connections, the construction of additional barriers and barbed-wire fences, and extensive fortification efforts. South Korean military estimates suggest that approximately 960,000 landmines have been placed in the border area over the last two years.
Tensions remain high following several border incidents, including a landmine explosion in September that injured three South Korean soldiers. South Korean authorities have also reported that North Korean troops crossed the demarcation line approximately 50 times this year during construction activities, leading to warning shots and verbal confrontations.
