North Korea utilizes 8,400 hackers for cyber operations

South Korean intelligence estimates that North Korea has built a specialized hacking army consisting of approximately 8,400 personnel. Under the direction of Kim Jong Un, these organized cyber operatives target banks, technology companies, and cryptocurrency platforms to conduct espionage, financial theft, and bypass international sanctions.

One recent operation attributed to this network involved the reported theft of approximately 6.3 billion dollars in digital assets from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. U.S. authorities have linked this attack to the cyber group TraderTraitor, which is suspected of having ties to the North Korean state.

The regime employs a long-term recruitment and training system, identifying high-performing students in mathematics and physics at a young age for specialized scientific and technological programs. While the general population remains largely isolated from the internet, these specialists receive dedicated access to technical resources and training. Intelligence assessments indicate the number of personnel involved in these operations has grown from roughly 6,800 in 2022 to 8,400 in 2024, with technical cooperation reportedly occurring in China and Russia.
