North Korea warns US over Taiwan and pledges support for Russia

North Korea has issued warnings to the United States regarding its military support and arms sales to Taiwan. Citing an international affairs analyst, North Korean state media KCNA stated that U.S. policy in the Taiwan Strait undermines regional peace and stability. The criticism follows the arrival of the first two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets in Taiwan, part of a 66-aircraft order placed in 2019.

Pyongyang cautioned Washington to consider the consequences of a direct confrontation with the People’s Republic of China over Taiwan’s security.

In a separate development, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a birthday message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the message, Kim pledged to expand the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations and expressed confidence that Russia’s military efforts would result in victory. This follows reports that North Korea has sent between 14,000 and 15,000 troops to support Russia since 2024, and a mutual defense pact signed by both leaders in June 2024.
