North Korean Crypto Threats Spur Security Reveal and Arrests

Fireblocks disclosed a set of critical vulnerabilities, dubbed “BitForge,” at Black Hat USA 2023. The flaws affect threshold signature schemes used by more than 15 crypto wallet providers and could allow nation‑state actors such as North Korea’s Lazarus group to extract private keys from multi‑party computation systems.

In a separate development, North Korean authorities reportedly arrested a group of former state cyber operators accused of hacking the country’s central bank and Foreign Trade Bank, converting the stolen funds into cryptocurrency and laundering them through China‑based brokers. The arrests, reported by Daily NK, would be an unusual case of North Korean hackers targeting their own state institutions and could prompt tighter internal controls.

Both incidents underscore heightened regulatory and security concerns surrounding cryptocurrency custodial practices and state‑sponsored cyber‑crime.
