North Korean military uses videos to punish soldiers watching foreign media

Leaked ideological training videos used by the North Korean military reveal the regime's intense efforts to suppress the consumption of foreign media, particularly South Korean and American content. According to reports from Radio Free Asia, the videos—believed to have been produced around 2023—depict the arrest of soldiers, the writing of apology letters, and discussions regarding severe punishments.

The footage includes harsh rhetoric from speakers calling for the “summary execution” of those influenced by imperialist culture and suggesting that families of offenders should also face collective responsibility. One segment highlights a military doctor who was caught watching prohibited materials, noting the shame brought upon his parents.

Paradoxically, the training materials themselves contain scenes from the very South Korean and American dramas they aim to ban, as well as images of confiscated mobile phones and arrest warrants. This exposure underscores the widespread penetration of the ‘Korean Wave’ within the North Korean military despite strict legal controls such as the Reactionary Ideology and Culture Rejection Act.
