North Korean troops cross inter-Korean border over 20 times in August

North Korean troops crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) more than 20 times during August, according to South Korean military officials. The frequency of these crossings in a single month surpassed the total of 17 reported cases for the entirety of 2025.

Officials noted that the intrusions occurred on the eastern front, with the first instance recorded in mid-August. The crossings were detected while North Korean soldiers were performing border fortification tasks in incomplete areas. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated that the intrusions do not appear to indicate unusual activity or significant changes in North Korean troop behavior.

In response to the crossings, the South Korean military followed established rules of engagement by issuing warning broadcasts and firing warning shots. Since late 2023, following Kim Jong-un’s declaration of inter-Korean relations as being between ‘two hostile states,’ North Korea has increased fortification efforts along the border using landmines and barbed-wire fences. The JCS is currently reviewing methods to enhance surveillance, including the potential installation of monitoring devices within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
