North Kurzeme Regional Hospital conducts chemical threat response drills

The North Kurzeme Regional Hospital in Ventspils conducted emergency response exercises on August 11 to test readiness for a chemical threat scenario. The drill was organized by the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) and the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).

The simulation involved a scenario where individuals were exposed to a toxic chemical substance in Ventspils. Simulated patients were brought to the hospital to undergo decontamination procedures to remove hazardous substances from their bodies. Dr. Mihails Romanovs, head of the Emergency Medicine and Patient Admission Department, coordinated the hospital's involvement, emphasizing the need for rapid and high-quality decontamination to protect both patients and the surrounding environment.

To facilitate the decontamination of multiple patients, rescuers from the Ventspils unit of the VUGD utilized specialized equipment. The exercises were designed to test practical readiness, identify areas for improvement, and ensure seamless cooperation between emergency services without disrupting the hospital's daily operations or routine patient care.
