North Macedonia 2001 Albanian insurgency details

In 2001, an Albanian insurgency erupted in what is now North Macedonia, led by the National Liberation Army (UCK). The conflict began in late January with attacks on Macedonian security forces and escalated throughout the summer, including incidents such as the massacre in Karpelak.

The UCK utilized Kosovo as a supply base and safe haven, with many members having previously fought in the Kosovo Liberation Army. While Macedonian authorities viewed the group as a masked extension of other conflicts, UCK members identified as ethnic Albanians born in Macedonia seeking to end decades of perceived oppression by the Slavic Macedonian government and achieve equal national status.

Despite the presence of a multi-ethnic coalition government at the time, UCK leaders reportedly rejected the legitimacy of Albanians within the government, prioritizing their own political and economic interests. The fighting resulted in several incidents affecting civilians, including the abduction of workers from the construction firm GP Mavrovo.
