Water safety crisis in Gostivar and Demir Kapija sparks political tension
North Macedonia is facing a water safety crisis involving multiple municipalities. In Gostivar, the water supply system was recently declared safe for drinking after a month-long period of contamination, which authorities claim was fully cleaned in under four weeks. The opposition SDSM has criticized the government's handling of the crisis, noting that thousands of citizens were affected and demanding the publication of official laboratory reports rather than political demonstrations of water safety.
Simultaneously, a water usage ban has been implemented in Demir Kapija. The local utility company, JKP ‘Bosava’, issued the ban for drinking and cooking after receiving contradictory laboratory results from two different institutions. A super-analysis is currently being conducted to resolve the discrepancy.
In Skopje, the Ministry of Interior has questioned 13 individuals for allegedly spreading false reports regarding water pollution on social media. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski characterized these reports as a ‘hybrid attack’ intended to create public panic and instability, suggesting commercial interests may be driving the misinformation.
