North Macedonia breast cancer awareness campaign emphasizes early detection
During Pink Month, medical experts in Skopje are emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis for breast cancer, noting that approximately 1,000 cases are reported annually in North Macedonia.
Oncologist Ilir Ismaili highlighted that early detection through self-examinations, ultrasounds, and mammograms can lead to full recovery. He categorized risk factors into internal elements, such as endocrine factors, early menstruation, and late menopause, and external factors, including alcohol, smoking, physical activity, and stress.
Turkish surgeon Omer Bender also participated in the awareness efforts, noting that modern aesthetic methods allow for breast reconstruction that is virtually indistinguishable after surgery. Ismaili noted that North Macedonia possesses comprehensive diagnostic procedures and a Ministry of Health program to track diagnosed cases, a systematic approach he noted is not present in neighboring countries.
