North Macedonia average net salary rises to 48,733 denars
The State Statistical Office of North Macedonia reported that the average monthly net salary per employee rose to 48,733 denars in August 2026, marking a 7.6% increase compared to August 2025. Significant growth was observed in the water supply and waste management sector (11.9%), administrative and support services (10.7%), and the manufacturing industry (9.0%).
Despite these statistical increases, economic experts and labor unions warn of a declining standard of living. The Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia (SSM) calculates that a four-member family requires a minimum monthly basket of 70,358 denars to cover basic needs. This leaves a gap of over 21,600 denars between the average salary and the cost of essential living.
Economic expert Abil Baush noted that while the minimum wage has increased, it remains insufficient to cover basic consumer needs, as the cost of essential goods and services has risen faster than wages. Citizens interviewed reported significant difficulty covering costs for electricity, water, and food, noting that even with rising nominal wages, they are unable to save money.
