North Macedonia declines in Rule of Law Index

North Macedonia has experienced a decline in the Rule of Law Index for 2026, according to a report by the World Justice Project. The country is now ranked 65th out of 143 states with a score of 0.54, falling one position from its 64th place ranking the previous year.

The report highlights significant weaknesses in anti-corruption efforts, parliamentary and judicial oversight of executive power, and the duration of judicial proceedings. Specifically, North Macedonia ranks 71st in anti-corruption and 95th in the enforcement of laws and regulations.

While the country shows stronger results in fundamental rights and limitations on government power, it faces challenges regarding transparency, accountability, and efficiency. The situation is further complicated by staffing shortages in courts and prosecutor offices, as well as high-level corruption cases that rarely result in final judicial decisions. Additionally, the country's ranking in order and security, currently at 43rd, has shown a downward trend since 2022.
