Macedonia faces wildfires and West Nile fever outbreak
Macedonia is facing a dual crisis involving widespread wildfires and a West Nile fever outbreak. The Crisis Management Center reported 31 open-air fires by the morning of September 5, with active blazes in Grachani and Belica. The fire in Grachani has crossed the border into Kosovo, affecting forest areas. Authorities, including Stojanche Angelov, have expressed alarm over the number of fires and suggested that some may have been intentionally set for criminal motives.
Simultaneously, the country is dealing with a West Nile fever epidemic. Seven deaths have been recorded this summer, with 19 patients currently hospitalized. The Levica party has criticized the Institute of Public Health for a lack of timely epidemiological reporting. Reports also indicate significant bird mortality, with over 130 deaths recorded, including confirmed cases in Skopje and Resen.
These emergencies are compounded by a severe heatwave, with temperatures forecasted to reach up to 37 degrees Celsius, increasing the risk of further fire outbreaks.
