North Macedonia expands Safe City traffic camera enforcement on corridors to Greece

On 1 February 2024 North Macedonia activated the electronic "Safe City" traffic‑monitoring system. High‑resolution cameras have been installed mainly along Corridor 10, the main route from Serbia to Greece via Kumanovo, Skopje and Gevgelija, with a smaller test deployment on Corridor 8 toward Ohrid.

The system records speed violations, red‑light runs, seat‑belt non‑use and mobile‑phone use. For vehicles with foreign plates the cameras do not yet issue automatic fines, but the violation data are instantly forwarded to police patrols and road‑interception units ("presretači"). Officers can stop the vehicle on the spot and issue a ticket. Fines range from €20 for modest speeding to €300 for high‑speed excess, with additional penalties for other offences. Payments can be made at the border, by card or by post, and a 50 % discount applies if the fine is settled within eight days.

Interior Minister Panče Toshkovski has urged compliance, noting that the cameras are continuously present on the corridors and that future upgrades will allow automatic penalty processing for foreign‑registered vehicles.
