North Macedonia expands Safe City system to monitor motorcycles

The Ministry of Internal Affairs in North Macedonia has implemented a technical solution to allow the ‘Safe City’ surveillance system to identify and register motorcycles. Previously, the system’s cameras primarily captured the front of vehicles, making it impossible to automatically identify motorcycles since their license plates are located at the rear.

Minister of Internal Affairs Panče Toškovski announced that additional equipment has been installed at selected locations with optimal technical conditions. The new setup reportedly detected approximately nine speeding violations on its first day of operation.

The Ministry is also addressing other technical challenges, including the placement of cameras at critical points and the identification of vehicles with foreign license plates. Efforts are underway to expand sanctioning capabilities at other border crossings, such as Tabanovce, where traffic volume was significantly higher than initial estimates. The goal is to develop a system that allows foreign drivers to settle obligations without being delayed at the border.

Regarding road safety, Toškovski reported that as of September 1, 2025, there were 60 traffic fatalities recorded, compared to 96 during the same period the previous year.
