North Macedonia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Panče Toshkovski, announced that the ‘Safe City’ automated traffic system has begun detecting and penalizing motorcyclists for speeding. Previously, the system was only capable of identifying motorcyclists for running red lights.

Toshkovski stated that the technical solution to register speeding violations automatically was implemented to increase safety for both motorcyclists and other road users. He noted that in August, four of the six traffic fatalities in the country involved motorcyclists.

The system is currently active on Corridors 8 and 10, as well as in the Skopje, Kumanovo, and Tetovo sectors. Expansion plans include the Veles, Kavadarci, and Negotino areas by mid-September, followed by Ohrid, Struga, and Kichevo by the end of next month. Further expansion is planned for Strumica, Shtip, and potentially Bitola by the end of the year. Additionally, the Ministry of Internal Affairs plans to launch a ‘Safe City’ mobile application to allow citizens to pay fines online.
