North Macedonia explores mineral and cultural resource potential

North Macedonia is facing discussions regarding the strategic use of its mineral resources and cultural heritage to drive economic development. Experts suggest that the country must avoid missing opportunities for growth by investing in geological research and responsible mining, similar to recent large-scale investments seen in Spain.

Key mining projects, such as Ilovica, remain in a state of uncertainty, highlighting the need for data-driven decision-making and inclusive debate involving geologists, economists, and local communities. The goal is to integrate mining into long-term national policy to foster investment and job creation while maintaining environmental standards.

In a related cultural context, the multimedia event ‘Mystical Macedonia – Museum Under the Open Sky’ is scheduled for November 6, 2026, in Sveti Nikole. Led by researcher Nikola Ristevski, the project aims to highlight the country’s geography, archaeology, and natural assets, such as the unique saline soils of Ovchepoliye, to promote cultural tourism and heritage preservation.
