North Macedonia faces significant demographic decline

North Macedonia is experiencing a profound demographic shift characterized by the emptying of small towns and rural areas. According to the 2021 Census, the country's population stands at 1,836,713, representing a 9.2 percent decrease of 185,834 people compared to 2002.

The decline is particularly acute in smaller settlements. Out of 1,781 inhabited places, 205 are reported to have no residents. Furthermore, 684 locations have fewer than 100 inhabitants, and 218 locations have fewer than ten residents.

This migration, driven by young people moving to larger cities or abroad, creates a ripple effect within communities. The departure of families leads to declining school enrollments, reduced local commerce, and challenges in maintaining essential services such as healthcare and administrative functions.
