North Macedonia forest fires cause 4 million euros in damage

The public enterprise 'Nacionalni Shumi' has recorded 138 forest fires in North Macedonia so far this season. Kire Mihailov, the deputy director of the enterprise, stated that the fires have devastated hundreds of hectares of forest.

As of the end of July, estimated damages amount to over 4 million euros. While significant, Mihailov noted this is relatively low compared to previous years, citing 83 million euros in damages in 2024 and over 50 million euros in 2025.

Causes for the fires include both arson and negligence. One notable incident occurred in the village of Bigla, Delchevo municipality, where over 200 hectares of forest were burned due to negligence. Mihailov emphasized the need for increased public awareness regarding the consequences of fires, such as air pollution, which has affected residents in Skopje.
