North Macedonia reduces fuel prices amid budget rebalancing

The Regulatory Commission for Energy, Water Services and Communal Waste Management in North Macedonia has announced a reduction in retail prices for petroleum derivatives, effective October 6, 2026. Following a decrease in global market reference prices, Eurosuper BS-95 and BS-98 will drop by 1.50 denar per liter, while Eurodiesel will decrease by 3.00 denar per liter. Other reductions include household oil and heating oil.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski stated that North Macedonia maintains some of the lowest fuel prices in the region, often 25 to 50 cents cheaper per liter than neighboring countries. This price advantage is supported by government measures, including a reduced VAT of 10% for Eurodiesel and a 4 denar reduction in excise tax for gasoline and diesel.

While lower prices benefit consumers and attract transit drivers from neighboring countries—thereby increasing fuel consumption and tax revenue—they also impact the national budget. Mickoski noted that the reduction in excise and VAT revenues is expected to cost the state between 7 and 8 billion denars, necessitating a budget rebalance in October to manage the deficit.
