Macedonia health ministry addresses cyclotron malfunction affecting PET scans

Health Minister Sasho Klekovski has clarified that the recent disruption in PET scanning services is due to a malfunctioning cyclotron rather than a broken PET scanner. The cyclotron, which produces the necessary scanning agents, has been out of operation for over a month, impacting oncology patients.

The defect in the cyclotron is reportedly a result of improper maintenance by a supplier involving a restricted-regime oil. To resolve the issue, the government is working to secure essential raw materials, which are currently available in the United States and Belgium. Foreign Minister Timcho Mutunski is coordinating with Brussels to expedite export permits from Belgium.

As an immediate measure, the health institution has been instructed to seek alternative sources for the necessary materials from Bulgaria or Turkey to restore services and maintain medical standards.
