North Macedonia Implements Summer Traffic Regime Restricting Heavy Vehicles

From tomorrow until 31 August, North Macedonia will enforce a temporary summer traffic regime on state roads. The measure bans the movement of heavy freight vehicles exceeding 15 tonnes on weekends, with specific time windows: Friday 17:00‑22:00, Saturday 09:00‑18:00 and Sunday 09:00‑22:00. During days of exceptionally high temperature, as defined by the Health Ministry, the ban extends to Monday‑Thursday 11:00‑17:00.

The restrictions apply to key mountain and river‑valley routes – Katlanovë‑Veles, Mavrovë‑Dibër‑Strugë, Vinicë‑Berovë and Koçan‑Dellçevë – and to the A2 highway (Skopje‑Ohrid‑Skopje), where vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are prohibited in the listed periods. Exemptions cover vehicles transporting live animals, flowers, humanitarian aid, grain, perishable goods, oil products, hazardous materials and those operating under contracts for public road projects. The regime aims to ease congestion on the main tourist corridor, reduce toll‑point queues and ensure smoother travel for tourists.
