North Macedonia inspectors monitor 600 sites for school supply price controls

The State Market Inspectorate in North Macedonia is conducting inspections at approximately 600 retail locations to enforce the ‘School Basket’ measure. The initiative, which runs until September 30, aims to reduce the cost of school supplies and backpacks.

Deputy Minister of Economy and Labor, Marjan Risteski, reported that while some initial labeling errors were identified, they have since been corrected. The measure mandates a price reduction of at least 10 percent for wholesalers and 15 percent for retailers compared to June 1 prices. Government estimates suggest families can save between 500 and 1,500 denars per child, with potential savings reaching up to 3,000 denars for families with two children.

Risteski warned that sanctions will be imposed on traders found violating the regulations. He also noted recent economic indicators, including a 4.3 percent GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026 and an annual inflation rate of 2.3 percent in July.
