North Macedonia joins EU4Health programme, securing €4.4 billion funding

Health Minister Azir Aliu announced that North Macedonia has signed the agreement to participate in the EU4Health programme, the European Union’s largest health‑related funding initiative with an operational budget of €4.4 billion. The accession is described as a major step toward aligning the Macedonian health system with EU standards and policies.

The programme opens opportunities for projects in digital health, disease prevention and early detection, screening, oncology, cardiovascular and mental health, preparedness for health crises, access to medicines and medical products, and strengthening the health workforce. Participation also grants exemption from VAT, customs duties and other fiscal charges on goods and services financed through the programme. The ministry plans to begin the next phase next week, mapping potential beneficiaries and preparing institutions for upcoming EU calls, grants and joint actions.

Aliu emphasized that the true success will be measured by turning European resources into concrete improvements for patients and the health system, noting that the programme will involve universities, medical faculties, hospitals, professional associations and patient organisations.
