North Macedonia Justice Minister proposes multilingual jurisprudence exam

North Macedonia's Minister of Justice, Jeton Shasivari, has announced plans to meet with law students and faculty deans to discuss a legal solution for the jurisprudence exam. The proposal aims to address language barriers by allowing the exam to be conducted in multiple languages, including Albanian, English, and Turkish.

However, the proposal has met resistance from student representatives. Besar Sejdi, president of students at Mother Teresa University in Skopje, rejected the Ministry's suggestion that the theoretical portion of the exam be held in Albanian while the practical portion be conducted in Macedonian. Sejdi argued that according to the Law on the Use of Languages, the Albanian language should be used in judicial and institutional procedures where it is spoken by at least 20 percent of the population. He maintains that students demand the entire exam, both theory and practice, be conducted in Albanian.

Minister Shasivari stated that the government is seeking a long-term, sustainable solution that complies with the Constitution rather than temporary legislative changes. He expressed confidence that professional and institutional clarifications would demonstrate that the proposed approach is an advancement toward inclusivity.
