North Macedonia labor market faces skill gaps and low engagement
The labor market in North Macedonia is facing a complex paradox characterized by both high unemployment and significant job vacancies. While approximately 90,000 people are classified as unemployed, there are 10,000 available positions. Experts suggest this gap is driven by a mismatch between worker qualifications and market needs. A large portion of the unemployed are long-term job seekers or individuals with limited formal education, making them unattractive to employers seeking digital or green skills.
Beyond skill gaps, companies face the issue of “actively disengaged employees.” This phenomenon involves workers who are physically present but psychologically detached, performing only the bare minimum to avoid reprimand without contributing real value or initiative. This lack of engagement often results in decreased productivity and inefficiency.
To address these challenges, experts recommend that employers invest in training and better compensation for domestic workers rather than relying on the temporary solution of importing foreign labor. Additionally, the Regional Chamber of Commerce emphasizes the need for educational reforms to ensure graduates possess the technological skills required by modern industries.
