North Macedonia launches psychological trauma support for police

The Ministry of Internal Affairs in North Macedonia has launched the first phase of a Psychological Trauma Support Program for police officers. Supported by the OSCE Mission to North Macedonia, the initiative aims to provide officers with practical skills in recognizing stress and trauma, psychological first aid, crisis intervention, and peer support.

Aleksandar Janev, Director of the Public Security Bureau, attended the program's commencement, emphasizing that seeking help is a sign of responsibility and professionalism rather than weakness. He noted that officers frequently face traumatic scenes, violence, and high-pressure decision-making, which can lead to serious consequences due to sleep deprivation, safety concerns, and family challenges. The program is intended to become a permanent part of continuous training and the support system for police personnel to combat the stigma associated with mental health assistance.
