North Macedonia leaders mark national uprising and address Bulgaria tensions
During ceremonies marking the October 11 National Uprising Day, North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski called for the establishment of ambitious national goals and the creation of a state driven by merit and knowledge rather than personal interests. President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova emphasized the need to build a democratic rule-of-law state where institutions serve all citizens and human dignity is protected.
Separately, Prime Minister Mickoski addressed the ongoing diplomatic tensions with Bulgaria. Despite a recent meeting in Sofia between officials that yielded no immediate progress, Mickoski expressed optimism regarding the start of dialogue. He stated that the ability to approach different positions and reach a compromise is a hallmark of democracy. This follows declarations from Bulgarian Minister Petrova Chamova that there would be no renegotiation of obligations or constitutional changes with deferred effects.
In response to the political situation, opposition leader Venko Filipçe of the LSDM emphasized that European integration is a long-standing national aspiration intended to provide opportunities for the country's youth and prevent emigration.
