North Macedonia mining debate calls for science-based decisions

The initiative ‘I Zdravje i Rabota’ (And Health and Work) has called for public debates regarding the future of mining in North Macedonia to be based on scientific facts, professional expertise, and institutional control rather than fear or unverified claims. The group emphasizes that environmental protection and citizen health should not be viewed as opposing economic development, but rather as components of modern, responsible mining that utilizes high ecological standards and continuous monitoring.

Regarding the ‘Ilovica-Stuka’ project, proponents argue that the debate should move away from political divisions and focus on how mining can coexist with ecology through strict standards. They suggest that North Macedonia can achieve economic benefits, such as job creation and increased exports, while ensuring the safety of water, soil, and air through rigorous technical documentation and independent assessments.
