North Macedonia mining sector faces labor decline

The mining and stone extraction sector in North Macedonia is facing a significant decline in its workforce. According to data from the State Statistical Office, the number of employees in the mining sector dropped by 7.7% in June 2026 compared to June 2025.

Despite this decline, the industry remains one of the better-paying sectors, with average monthly wages now exceeding 1,000 euros. However, experts warn that without new investments and projects, the sector faces a long-term risk of labor shortages and an aging workforce.

The Ilovica-Štuka project, led by Euromax Resources, is highlighted as a critical potential solution. The company has projected the creation of 1,000 direct jobs during the construction phase and 500 direct jobs during operations. Furthermore, the project is expected to generate approximately 2,700 indirect jobs through local suppliers and contractors in sectors such as food supply, transport, and accommodation.
