SDSM criticizes Mickoski over US trip and antimony mining grant
The SDSM opposition party has criticized Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski following a week-long trip to the United States. The party claims the delegation, consisting of approximately 50 people, failed to secure any official meetings or meaningful results, characterizing the trip as an expensive excursion funded by citizens.
SDSM specifically targeted the announcement of a $5 million grant for antimony development in Krstov Dol, Kriva Palanka. The opposition argues that this amount is insufficient to manage the environmental risks associated with antimony mining, such as soil and water contamination. They expressed concerns that the metal, used in the military industry, could pose significant health risks to local populations and ecosystems.
Furthermore, the party contrasted the $5 million grant with the 5.53 million euros spent on a public celebration funded by lottery proceeds. SDSM accused the government of selling off national resources for minimal gain and prioritizing personal commissions over environmental protection and public health.
