North Macedonia patients face critical risks awaiting heart transplants

Patients in North Macedonia are facing critical health risks as they wait years for life-saving heart transplants. Darko Najdeski, 33, from Ohrid, has relied on two mechanical pumps, electricity, and batteries for seven years to sustain life. While the mechanical devices continue to function, his natural heart is failing, creating a complex medical situation due to the long-term use of such equipment.

Vasko Joleski, 41, from Struga, has also lived with mechanical circulatory support for over six years. Joleski, who serves as the president of the ‘Zemër e Guximshme’ association, highlighted that prolonged waiting periods lead to organ failure and increased complications. Both patients and their families are issuing urgent appeals for organ donors to prevent further medical deterioration.
