Macedonia performs first kidney transplant from mother to child with Alport syndrome

Medical teams at the University Clinic of Urology in Skopje have successfully performed the first kidney transplant from a mother to her child suffering from Alport syndrome in Macedonia. Alport syndrome is a rare inherited genetic disorder that damages kidney tissue and can lead to renal failure and the necessity for dialysis.

Following extensive medical testing, the mother was confirmed as a compatible living donor. Health Minister Sasho Klekovski praised the procedure as a demonstration of professionalism and teamwork within the national healthcare system. National Transplant Coordinator Professor Biljana Kuzmanovska expressed gratitude to the family for allowing the case to be shared publicly to serve as a guide for future treatments of rare genetic diseases.

This successful intervention brings the total number of kidney transplants performed at the University Clinic of Urology this year to 15, an increase from the 11 transplants recorded throughout the entirety of 2025.
