North Macedonia plans 1.3 billion euro international debt issuance for 2027
The Ministry of Finance of North Macedonia has initiated procedures to borrow 1.3 billion euros on the international market during 2027. According to the Ministry, the funds are intended to finance the 2027 budget deficit and to repay existing obligations, including a 2023 Eurobond maturing in 2027. The Ministry stated that this borrowing aligns with the country's Fiscal Strategy and Public Debt Strategy.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. The SDSM party accused the government of dishonesty, claiming that the current administration has added 4 billion euros to the national debt in just two years, representing half of the total debt accumulated by all previous governments over the last 35 years.
Official data for 2026 indicates that North Macedonia's public debt has reached over 10.7 billion euros, which is approximately 60% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
