North Macedonia plans fuel VAT reduction amid energy concerns
North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has announced that the government is planning to reduce VAT on fuels as part of a strategy to manage energy stability. Mickoski stated that the government is taking cautious steps to ensure that these measures do not disrupt the country's macroeconomic stability while aiming to provide the lowest fuel prices for citizens and industry.
Addressing concerns regarding energy security, Mickoski noted that the geopolitical situation in the Gulf may persist for several years. He reassured the public that state oil and petroleum derivative reserves are sufficient to cover 50% to 60% of the consumption levels recorded prior to the current crisis.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted that fuel prices in North Macedonia remain among the lowest in the region. He noted that diesel is currently 0.50 EUR cheaper per liter than in Albania and 0.35 EUR cheaper than in Serbia, attracting consumers from neighboring countries to fill their tanks in North Macedonia.
