North Macedonia PM Micevski pledges no bankruptcy amid economic woes

Prime Minister Christian Micevski told reporters that Macedonia will not face bankruptcy in 2024 or 2025. He announced a continuation of the crisis state, promising cuts to excise taxes on unleaded gasoline and diesel to keep fuel prices low, and said the government expects solid GDP growth, with construction already over 40 % in April and double‑digit growth in trade and tourism.

Opposition and analysts counter that foreign investment has fallen by more than 60 %, European integration stalls, and consumer prices are at record highs. They note that wage increases lag behind rising costs, the budget is strained by €2.5 billion of new debt, and the second pension pillar is at risk. Critics describe the PM’s promises of “good times” as repeatedly unfulfilled over the past two years.
