Macedonian police officer placed in eight‑day pre‑trial detention for abusing traffic‑fine authority
A police officer from the Traffic Safety Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Skopje was charged with repeated abuse of office between April and July 2026. The officer allegedly took cash payments for traffic‑fine tickets instead of processing them through POS terminals, falsified payment records, reduced fines, and allowed vehicles seized for illegal parking to leave the municipal parking depot without paying. The misconduct is said to have caused a loss of at least 85,500 denars to the North Macedonian state budget.
The Specialized Unit for Organized Crime and Corruption at the Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a criminal case for abuse of office and authority. A judge ordered an eight‑day pre‑trial detention, citing risks of flight, repeat offending, and possible influence on witnesses.
