North Macedonia Public Prosecutor reports rising indictments and staff shortages
State Public Prosecutor Nenad Saveski presented the 2025 annual report to the Council of Public Prosecutors, highlighting a significant increase in indictments. The number of indictments filed rose by 334 cases compared to 2024.
Saveski reported that in 2025, 25,615 new persons were reported, adding to 51,474 cases carried over from 2024, totaling 77,089 cases. Despite this workload, the institution faces critical challenges, including severe human resource shortages and inadequate facilities. Currently, only 194 out of 261 prosecutor positions are filled, meaning approximately 35 percent of positions remain vacant. Saveski noted that the shortage often results in a single prosecutor performing the workload of three people.
The report also addressed the need for the Law on Public Prosecution to be passed in accordance with Venice Commission recommendations, particularly regarding budget allocations. Additionally, the Council adopted a new rulebook for the selection of the head of the Organized Crime and Corruption Prosecution Office to increase transparency in the interview and presentation process.
