North Macedonia reports 10,000 sheep deaths in pox outbreak

North Macedonia is facing a significant sheep pox outbreak, with 64 confirmed hotspots and approximately 10,000 sheep deaths reported. Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy Borche Serafimovski stated that the majority of outbreaks are located in the Eastern region (50), followed by the Northeastern (7), Vardar (6), and Skopje (1) regions.

Authorities have identified the use of unsterilized shearing equipment as a primary risk factor for transmission. To combat the spread, the government is working with the European Commission, Turkey, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to secure vaccines. However, Serafimovski noted that the decision to begin vaccination will depend on professional assessments of epidemiological risks and economic consequences.

To support affected farmers, the Food and Veterinary Agency has established a compensation model, and preparations for fund allocation are underway. Officials have urged livestock owners to strictly follow disinfection protocols and report suspicious cases immediately. Additionally, the ministry is monitoring the situation in neighboring Greece and has consulted with Serbian authorities to exchange information and experience.
