Macedonia PM Mickoski Announces agriculture subsidies boost, EU reforms and fuel price actions

Prime Minister Christian Mickoski said the government has paid more than 15 billion denars in direct agricultural subsidies over the past two years, noting increased production and a reduced deficit in agricultural trade.

He told reporters that Macedonia is ahead of other candidate countries in implementing EU‑required reforms, with all legislative steps completed except the electoral law, which remains in a “grace period” until December. Mickoski highlighted a recent video conference with EU Commissioner Ger Jan Copman and affirmed a commitment to meet the December deadline.

Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski said negotiations with the EU continue positively, though no concrete solution can yet be presented publicly. He mentioned ongoing discussions about constitutional changes concerning the Bulgarian minority and clarified that protocol provisions do not bind the negotiation framework.

Mickoski also warned of rising fuel prices and said the government is examining further measures, including possible targeted subsidies, a reduction of excise duties already applied, and even a temporary cut to the VAT on fuel, although the latter would affect budget revenues.

Opposition leader Venko Filipçe accused the administration of a systemic health‑care collapse, citing staff shortages, long waiting lists, non‑functional operating rooms, and unqualified appointments in the health‑insurance fund.
