North Macedonia to fine foreign-registered vehicles for traffic violations

North Macedonia's Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the automated “City of Safety” system, active since 1 February 2026, has recorded over 130,000 traffic violations, with about 95 % involving speeding. Between 2 February and 31 May 2026, 33,722 violations were logged from vehicles with foreign licence plates.

Minister Pançe Toshkovski announced that fines for foreign‑registered drivers will soon be issued at border crossings via SMS or a dedicated app, after the software for automatic processing is completed. Until then, police interceptor units are enforcing penalties on the spot. The ministry also noted a 40 % drop in traffic‑accident victims from February to June compared with the same period last year.

The government aims to use artificial‑intelligence‑driven solutions and cross‑border data exchanges to ensure that foreign drivers are held accountable, mirroring practices in other European countries.
