North Macedonia sees declining marriage rates and rising divorces

Official data from the State Statistical Office reveals significant shifts in the family structure of North Macedonia between 2020 and 2025. Total marriages have seen a notable decline, with 10,507 marriages recorded in 2025. Specifically, marriages within the Macedonian community dropped from 4,701 in 2020 to 2,623 in 2025, while marriages within the Albanian community decreased from 3,829 to 2,301 during the same period.

Conversely, divorce rates have trended upward. Among the Macedonian community, divorces rose from 981 in 2020 to 1,036 in 2025. In the Albanian community, divorces increased from 260 to 341.

Inter-ethnic marriages remain a small portion of the total, typically accounting for between 6% and 10% of annual unions. In 2025, Macedonian men married 29 Serbian women and 24 Albanian women. Among Albanian men, 38 married Macedonian women, while 24 Albanian women married Macedonian men. Other recorded inter-ethnic unions included Albanian-Turkish and Albanian-Bosniak marriages.
