North Macedonia joins EU4Health program with €4.4 billion funding

Health Minister Azir Aliu signed an agreement in Brussels for the Republic of North Macedonia to participate in the EU4Health programme, the European Union’s largest health‑sector fund worth €4.4 billion. The accession is presented as a key step toward aligning Macedonia’s health system with EU standards and a vote of confidence in the country’s ongoing reforms.

EU4Health will give Macedonia access to European calls for projects, grants, public procurement and joint actions. The programme covers a wide range of areas, including digital health, disease prevention, early detection, screening, oncology, cardiovascular and mental‑health services, preparedness for health crises, improved access to medicines and the strengthening of the health‑workforce. The agreement provides exemptions from VAT, customs duties and other fiscal charges on goods and services financed through the fund.

The ministry said the next phase begins next week, with active presentation of the programme, mapping of potential beneficiaries and preparation of institutions for participation in EU calls. Officials aim to involve universities, medical faculties, hospitals, research institutes, professional associations and patient organisations.
