North Macedonia to expand ‘Safe City’ project nationwide

North Macedonia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Panče Toškovski, announced that the ‘Safe City’ project is expected to be implemented nationwide by the end of this year or by early 2027 at the latest. The system is intended to enhance traffic safety and reduce road fatalities.

The system is already operational in Skopje, Kumanovo, Tetovo, and within the Veles Police Station area, which includes Kavadarci, Negotino, and Demir Kapija. The next locations slated for implementation are Ohrid, Strumica, and Štip, with Bitola expected to follow by the end of the year or early 2027. The primary technical challenge remains the network connectivity to the central system.

Toškovski highlighted that traffic safety is a major challenge, noting that approximately 30 percent of the 12,000 criminal offenses recorded this year were traffic-related. Of these, 2,200 cases involved reckless driving. While the minister noted a trend of improvement compared to last year, he expressed dissatisfaction with the current number of victims.
