North Macedonia to implement certification system for Macedonian ruby

The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources of North Macedonia is implementing a new institutional framework to protect and certify the Macedonian ruby. A newly formed Commission, working alongside the Geological Institute and the State Institute for Industrial Property, aims to establish a functional system for the mineral's traceability.

Key objectives of this initiative include the creation of an authenticity certificate—acting as a ‘passport’ for the stone—to guarantee its origin and quality. The system will also involve establishing a formal register of authorized producers and processors, monitoring the movement and quantities of the mineral, and setting strict standards for its processing, labeling, and market presentation. These measures are intended to prevent the fraudulent sale of other minerals as Macedonian rubies and to increase the gemstone's international market value through verified authenticity.
