North Macedonia to use AI to fine motorcyclists without helmets

North Macedonia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Panče Toshkovski, announced that the ‘Safe City’ system will soon utilize artificial intelligence to detect and fine motorcyclists for not wearing helmets. The announcement was made during his visit to the ‘Moto Ilinden Urban Drive’ festival at the Boris Trajkovski Sports Center in Skopje, an event focused on promoting motorcycle safety and education.

Toshkovski highlighted that the new technological approach is part of a broader effort to improve road safety. He noted that in the first nine months of the year, traffic fatalities have decreased by approximately 30 percent, with 33 fewer deaths compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the number of injured persons has dropped by about 19 percent, including a positive trend in accidents involving motorcyclists.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to conduct intensified traffic controls targeting speed, proper licensing, and the use of protective gear. The integration of AI into the ‘Safe City’ system aims to further reduce risks to both riders and other road users by automating the detection of helmet violations.
