North Macedonia urges fiber‑rich diets and six‑month exclusive breastfeeding
Health officials in North Macedonia highlight two key nutrition practices. Studies show that people who live longest consume diets high in plant fibre—such as the Mediterranean, traditional Japanese, Nordic, DASH and primarily plant‑based regimens—typically 25‑38 g of fibre per day. High fibre intake is linked to lower risk of heart disease, type‑2 diabetes and certain cancers.
The Ministry of Health also reiterates the World Health Organization’s recommendation that infants be exclusively breast‑fed for the first six months. Pediatrician Harkan Memedi notes that breast milk provides essential nutrients, strengthens the infant’s immune system and reduces infection risk, while supporting maternal health. The ministry calls on institutions, employers and families to create conditions that enable mothers to follow this guidance.
