North Macedonia vehicle fleet shows increasing average age
North Macedonia's vehicle fleet continues to age, with used cars significantly outnumbering new imports. According to Customs Administration data through August 2026, the country imported 10,017 new passenger cars and 31,165 used vehicles during the first eight months of the year. This represents a ratio of approximately one new car for every 3.1 used vehicles.
While new car imports saw an 18.2 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, the growth in used vehicle imports was more modest at 4.8 percent.
Data from the State Statistical Office indicates a long-term trend of an aging fleet. In 2024, the average age of passenger cars in North Macedonia was 19.4 years, up from 15.7 years in 2009. Furthermore, over 87 percent of the 580,210 registered passenger cars in 2024 were more than 10 years old.
